Tips from Ray's first trip to
Cuba CUBANS AND CASAS
PARTICULAR
I went to Cuba in January and found it to be a wonderful
country to visit.
If you are single as I am or a married couple and are living by
a budget, in my opinion, the best way to visit and see Cuba is to rent a
private room in a Cuban house. The prices are very reasonable depending
where and which province you are going to. The room I found was $20 US a day
including breakfast. Furthermore, if you request other meals can be
arranged for a few extra dollars a day.
The best way to do that is to go on the internet and write
private rooms in Cuba and you will definitely find many.
They usually have photos of the rooms, and bathrooms with shower. I
personally found it to be a very nice and clean place. They also
have 120 and 220 volts electrical outlets to plug whatever appliance you
have.
Cuban people are so friendly and very helpful.
If you feel lonely and want to go for a walk, just ask one of the
family members to go with you and they will assist you. The family I
lived with were very warm and caring specially in my case due to my visual
impairment. One of the family members and I visited so many places
and shops. One of these was a Cuban bakery in the province of Holguin where
I was vacating. It made such a wonderful little pie or cookie like snack
called Pastel. That is like two pieces of pastry one
on top of the other with a guava fruit jelly in the middle. I actually
relish the taste of it and found it to be quite delicious.
.
Finally, a few tips of good advice that I
would like to share with you.
(1) In Cuba they only want American currency and no
other international currencies. However, if you want to have your
money go a little further, exchange most of your US dollars for
Cuban Pesos.
(2) Some people told me that you can not use the Cuban
train because it is just for Cuban people. However, I found out that was not
true. The only reason they say that is because Cuban trains are not as luxurious
as tourist trains. For one, the seats are more like metal chairs with no
padding. They are more noisy than the tourist train but are much
cheaper. I decided to take one to one just for the fun of it
and I liked it. All I have to say is if you do take it, sit in the middle
and not at either ends of the train because it shakes a bit from side
to side.
(3) You can also go to Cuban bars and restaurants but they
are not as nice as the tourist ones. I went to 4 or five of them and
liked them however, I was not to happy with the bathrooms or washrooms
because of the lack of toilet paper.
(3) Finally, if you want to get around at a
really good price, I suggest that you rent yourself a car. It so
much more affordable than Cuba Taxi. Or for short distance runs, take a horse
of cycle taxi ride from someone because they only charge a few pesos.
All I have to say now is that I really enjoyed Cuba and that I would go back
any day or as some people would say, "IN A FLASH".
